APA Planet Fitness Winter Powerlifting Classic

This was one of the most successful meets I have done yet. We had 3 teams and two world records set. The action started with 123lb Joseph Gering II from the Des Moines IA area. Joseph opened with an easy 235 squat. From there he went to 260 for a strong state record. Unfortunately Joseph narrowly missed his third attempt at 275. Joseph was coming back from surgery and had missed 5 months of training. Over double body weight is a very impressive comeback.
Then our only teenage lifter, Ryan Anderson from Des Moines IA stepped up to the platform. Ryan weighed in at 166lbs putting him in the 181-pound division. Undaunted Ryan finished out the squats with a state record 400lbs. Both of these young men were fine representatives of team Des Moines Strength Institute.
We then had a novice, Mike Bode from near Chicago Illinois open with a 400-lb squat in the 198s. Unfortunately Mike missed two attempts at 425 but he stayed in the game.
Then came THE Master. DeEdwin Shaw from Burlington Iowa, lifting for the Planet Fitness Power Warriors. At the age of 63 DeEdwin weighed in at 215lbs. He opened with an easy 540. 500 was the current WPA world record for DeEdwin’s age and weight division. The Master did 570 next; he must have been feeling spry because he called for 600lbs on his third attempt. The crowd was behind DeEdwin. He unracked the weight and the room became silent. I had the fortune of side judging this lift. He took it deep! Very deep! Then he began his ascent; the weight moved slower and slower and began to stall. The crowd went wild yelling encouragement at him. He seemed to draw energy from the crowd and the weight began moving again. Faster and faster until it was locked! Then came the “RACK” command! LIFT WAS GOOD! The crowd was electrified.
DeEdwin was a hard act to follow but Rob Hernandez from the Chicago area was up for the task. Rob weighed in at 233, which put him in the 242s. Rob opened with an easy 585. He missed his second attempt of 650 but feeling strong called for 665 anyway. Rob took this weight deep and went from the bottom to the top with authority.
In the 275 open division we had a battle between Al Baehr from the Chicago area and Wayne Hammes from Oskaloosa, Iowa. Al opened very light with 400 pounds. And ended his 3 attempts with an easy 510.
Wayne replied with a 585 opener, this didn’t seem challenging enough to this veterinarian and he called for 630 on his second attempt. It still looked like Wayne needed some weight on the bar so he went to 665. Wayne took this weight deep and “popped” up with it. Finishing out our day for the squats.
Entering the bench we were treated to a mighty little lady from the Chicago area. Maroscher Powerlifting Team member Candy Thurston made 110lbs look like an empty bar on her opener. Her subsequent lifts of 120 and 130 appeared just as easy. I think this little lady is going to need about 150 to 160 pounds on the bar to give her a challenge. Candy went home with the Illinois State record in the bench for the women’s open. Nice going Candy!
Then Joseph Gering was back to establish a good Iowa State Record for us in the 123 men’s open. Joseph opened with what appeared to be a conservative 135. Joseph finished out his benchpresses with 155lbs.
This led us into our Teenage lifter, Ryan Anderson. Ryan pushed a nice 225 on his second attempt narrowly missing 230 on his third.
We were then introduced to Tim Groomes with Team Des Moines Strength Institute. Tim was in the Push/Pull competition. The push/pull works like a mini powerlifting meet. The benchpress and deadlift are done for a total. Tim weighed in at 175lbs and got a nice 350 for double his bodyweight on his second attempt. Tim narrowly missed 365 on his third. Unfortunately Tim was in the Novice division and there are no records kept for novices. Hopefully we will see Tim entering the open division real soon. He certainly is a top-notch open class lifter!
Another Novice powerlifter was up to bat. Mike Bode got a nice 275 for his opener but unfortunately missed 300 on his next two attempts.
Then came Planet Fitness Power Warrior Brent Mixer. Brent opened with a strong 305 for a new state record in the 198 open class. Unfortunately 320 just wasn’t there for him on attempts 2 and 3.
Next was THE Master, DeEdwin Shaw. DeEdwin opened with an easy 275, then took 300 up for a new Iowa State Record, unfortunately 325 just was not there for him in this meet.
Team Des Moines Strength Institute had not shown us all of their stuff yet. Now they brought out another push/pull competitor. Pat Thomas lifting in the 220 Novice division hit a nice 380 on his second attempt and nearly got his third with 400lbs. I look for big records set by this young man in the future.
In the 242s we had another Master Carl Kuester. Carl was in the 55-59-age category, lifting with Maroscher Powerlifting Team, and opened with a nice 240 bench. Carl finished out with an Illinois State Record 270 pounds. Guys like Carl truly inspire me.
Then came much improved Rob Hernandez. Rob opened with an easy 385. He then finished out his bench day with 400 pounds. Just last June Rob missed 385 twice. What a superb improvement for Rob.
In the 275s the battle raged on. Al Baehr opened with a nice 340; Wayne Hammes saw his 340 and raised him 45 for a nice 385. Al, who was not using his shirt, hit a nice 355 on his second attempt. Wayne went on to blast 410 up like it was a warm-up weight. Al missed his third attempt of 365 in a gallant battle. Wayne went on to bench an Iowa State Record 425 still making it look like a warm-up weight.
In the mean time, in the benchpress competition, Planet Fitness Power Warrior Frank Pinto was in the game. Frank was lifting in the Masters 50-54 category. Frank’s last powerlifting competition was in 1970. Frank has since done very well in the bodybuilding arena. Frank was benching reverse grip in this meet. He opened with an Iowa State Record 325. His opener went up easy. Frank then took 360 for a ride 2/3 of the way up and stalled. Frank forfeited his third attempt.
Finally we had Morning Sun Iowa’s Thomas Calvin. Thomas was lifting in the Super Heavy Weights. Thomas opened with 430, then moved on to 450, and finished out his day with a strong 470. I don’t think it will be too long before Thomas cracks the 500 barrier. What a great conclusion to the benchpresses for the day.
The meet aint over until the bar hits the floor! That’s an old saying among powerlifters and certainly true in this case.
The Deadlifting began with 123 pound Joseph Gering. Joseph opened with an easy 300. He took 335 on his second attempt to lock in a 750 pound total. Joseph was here today to do a triple body-weight deadlift. He called for 365 on his third attempt (he weighed in at 122). He gave that 365 one heck of a ride but it was not to be. Was a fantastic day of lifting for Joseph anyway. Joseph had set state records in all 3 of his lifts and his total. Nice comeback from your surgery Joseph!
Next up to bat was our lone teenage lifter. Ryan Anderson ended up pulling 375 for a half-ton total and 4 state records. Congratulations go to Ryan.
Then came the first of our novices. Tim Groomes, who weighed in at 175, ended up with an authoritative pull of 470. Tim totaled 820lbs in two lifts. When Tim moves into the open division he is going to be setting records that will stand for some time.
Our next novice was Mike Bode. Mike pulled an easy 485 on his second attempt and missed 560 on his third. Mike finished out his day with an 1160 total.
Then came our first 500lb deadlift of the day. The Master DeEdwin Shaw opened with the current world record in his class. DeEdwin pulled a nice 540 on his second attempt but missed 580 on his third. DeEdwin has pulled 600 in competition twice in the passed year and I look for a 600lb world record from him in the WPA before he moves into the next masters division. DeEdwin finished out his day with a total of 1440. The 1440 total also would have been world record but I had not judged his benchpress.
Next came another novice Pat Thomas. Pat opened with 500 pounds at a body-weight of 219. Pat went on to pull 515 then took 530 almost all the way to the top. Pat simply did not lock the 530 out. It is there for him next time. No doubt in my mind. Mike finished out his meet with a two-lift total of 895.
Also in the 220s was brand new WPC world champion Eric Maroscher. Eric has just come back from the WPC worlds in Africa and was looking for a low-pressure local meet to just have fun. Eric astounded the crowd by opening at 600 pounds and making it look like a warm-up weight. He went 635 on his second attempt for a new Illinois State Record. He narrowly missed an attempt at 665. Very nice lifting Eric!
In the 242s Rob opened with 585. Going after Al Baehr’s State record Rob attempted 635 on both his second and third attempts. But it just wasn’t there today. Rob finished out his day with a 1650 Illinois State Record total. Congratulations Rob!
Also in the 242s we had another Master. Carl Kuester opened with 470 then attempted 500 twice. His first go at 500 stuck 2/3 of the way up and he struggled with it for what must have seemed like an eternity to him. What stamina that man has! But alas it wasn’t to be. Carl missed 500 again on his third attempt but finished out his day with a great 740 two-lift total. Good Job Carl!
Another strong man and veteran of the sport was up. Wayne Hammes of Oskaloosa Iowa. Wayne runs HUGE Benchpress Deadlift meets twice a year. Sometimes getting as many as 100 lifters. Plus a benchpress meet in Sigourny Iowa every July 4th. Wayne's meets are unsanctioned and very well run. It was a true honor having him attend mine.
Wayne opened with 585 pounds. And of course made it look easy. Wayne then took a conservative 610 and finished out with 630. All of Wayne's lifts looked very submaximal yet he finished out the day with a 1720 total while weighing in at 260. Thankyou Wayne for showing us how a veteran of the sport performs!
Wayne’s competition in the 275s was up. Al Baehr opened with 500 pounds. It was a very conservative lift for Al. Al went 635 on his second attempt, locking in a 1500 total but missed a very nice go at 650 pounds.
Our lone lady deadlifter, Amy Morrow, performed beautifully. Amy opened with a conservative 300. She then took 335 on her second attempt, and finished out with an Illinois State Record as well as a Personal Record 355 pounds. Terrific lifting by a terrific lady. I guess it is true, blondes do have more fun.
We had a two-way tie for first place among the teams. Des Moines Strength Institute and Maroscher Powerlifting Team both had 4 lifters who placed first. I gave the captains the options of either adding up formulas or sharing first place. Both agreed to share first place. The Planet Fitness Power Warriors were left with second.
I want to take this time to thank Paul and Holly Armstrong, owners of Planet Fitness Gym for allowing me to use their facilities to run this meet. I also want to thank Eric Maroscher for bringing the Oakie Deadlift bar. Special thanks also go to the judges and spotter/loaders and all the other people who made this meet possible. But most of all I want to thank my wife Penny. Without her help I could never run a meet. She is my partner and gives me a lot of good input. She is a very special lady.
